Dear All=20

Workshop on empirical estimation of relative pollen productivity

Hull 24-26 May 2010

=20

Collecting empirical estimates of relative pollen productivity from =
field data using the Extended-R-value approach is an essential =
pre-requisite for testing and applying PolLandCal approaches to =
vegetation reconstruction from pollen signals, such as the Landscape =
Reconstruction Algorithm or the Multiple Scenario Approach. Multiple =
studies have been published over the last few years (see e.g. review in =
Brostr=F6m et al 2008), but methods have varied between studies. =20

=20

A research workshop is being held to establish a standardised =
methodology for obtaining pollen productivity estimates (PPEs) in =
various habitats as part of a larger research project based at the =
University of Hull. Since the workshop brings together many authors of =
recent key studies (including Professor M-J Gaillard-Lemdahl, Linnaeus =
University, Sweden; Dr Kari Hjelle, University of Bergen, Norway; Dr A-B =
Nielsen, University of G=F6ttingen, Germany; Dr Henrik von Stedingk, =
Ume=E5 University, Sweden), we would like to offer an opportunity for =
other scientists with an interest in estimating pollen productivity to =
join us, learn about the approach, and contribute to the debate. In =
order to facilitate involvement by early career scientists or those with =
limited familiarity with pollen dispersal and deposition modelling, =
there will be half-day pre- and post-workshop sessions which will review =
relevant theory and software packages, as outlined in the programme =
below:

=20

Schedule:=20

=20

Monday am: pre-workshop lecture/practical session: introduction to =
pollen dispersal and deposition models: why do we need PPEs? What are =
PPEs? Brief introduction to the HUMPOL/LANDSCAPE software suites used =
for ERV analysis (for those unfamiliar with the approach).

Monday afternoon: main workshop begins with presentations of previous =
and current studies and methodologies for fieldwork and data processing.

=20

Tuesday: field working day: practical demonstration, evaluation and =
discussion of vegetation survey methods in different habitats. =20

Tuesday evening: discussion of findings.

=20

Wednesday morning: discussion and finalising of field and data =
processing methodology. Close of main workshop.

Wednesday afternoon: post-workshop session: discussion of the range of =
applications of pollen productivity estimates within models of pollen =
dispersal and deposition (e.g. simulation, hypothesis testing, =
reconstruction of past vegetation composition and distribution), =
practice with HUMPOL and POLLSCAPE software and opportunities to discuss =
ideas and get individual advice if wanted (for those unfamiliar with the =
approach).

=20

The programme begins at 09:30 on Monday 24th May and will end by 17:00 =
on Wednesday 26th May (or from 14:00 on the 24th to 13:00 on the 26th if =
the extra sessions are not attended).=20

=20

Registration is =A380 and includes refreshments and lunch on all three =
days, an evening meal on Tuesday 25th May, copies of HUMPOL and lecture =
notes, and travel to field sites. If you are interested in attending, =
please complete and return the attached registration form to =
crackles@hull.ac.uk by 31st March if you would like us to look into the =
possibility of arranging accommodation for you, or 30th April if you =
plan to arrange your own accommodation. If for any reason you have a =
problem opening the attached form please contact us on the same email =
address.

=20

A contribution towards registration, travel expenses and accommodation =
is available for a limited number of attendees. If you would like to =
apply for this funding, please send details of how the workshop will =
benefit you and your research, any other funding sources that you have =
access to, and an outline budget for attendance at the workshop (not =
exceeding one side of A4) along with your registration form. The =
deadline for applications for funding is 31st March.

=20

Best regards,

Michelle Farrell
